Chrysler Repair: 98 T&C: message center. A/C temp, chime problems, check fuse, postal mail

Question
We just bought a 98 T&C "AS IS" and have a few problems.  First, the instrument
panel that has the blinkers, high beam, etc. (the thin narrow one across the top)
does not light up.  All other gauges are fine.  Second, there is heat coming out
of the passengers side vents when the ac is on and third, a chime comes on
intermittently while driving.  Ths is our first experience with a T&C so we're not
sure where to turn.  Thanks for your help!

Answer
Hi Kim,
The chiming while driving is probably a door that is too loosely latched. So have a passenger try to push and pull on all the doors from inside while you are driving to see if doing so will cause a chime. Then reset the striker plate for that door to make it closes more firmly.
The A/C temp control is handled by the blend-air door for the passenger side not being adjusted properly. It could be that the door is hanging up inside the housing, or the actuator that moves the door is defective. There is a page in the manual that shows its location on the under-dash housing which I can xerox copy and postal mail to you.
Finally the message center itself probably has an electical disconnect between the plug-in socket and the circuit board. But first check fuse #6 in the box under the dash to be sure it isn't cracked or blown. You can remove the unit and look carefully at the connection points to identify a cold solder joint which is repairable with a small soldering iron. To get to it, you remove the A-pillar trim, using a soft flat stick lift the rear edge of the top cover (held by three clips in the middle, two on each end), remove the wiring harness for the message center, pull the top cover rearward to disengage hooks holding front edge to instrument panel, then remove the top cover. Remove wire connector from back of the message center. Then remove the screws holding the message center to the top cover. You then can examine the circuit board/plug socker interface to note a crack.
Let me know a postal mailing address if you want that AC door diagram.
Good luck with your vehicle, I hope it will serve you well.
