we need a *how to* diagram to take the starter out.  any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Jennifer,
First, I am using the '98 manual for the LH body cars which probably applies to your '99 300M. I would begin by verifying that the starter relay in the power distribution box under the hood will click softly when you try to use the starter via the key. If it doesn't, then there is something else wrong that we will have to resolve.
If it clicks and yet the starter doesn't work then removing the starter is likely, but I would test the starter by removing the starter relay from its socked and jumping a wire from pin B to pin D, the two rear pins that are side by side in the socket, and that should cause the starter to fire up. The relay is the fourth one from the front of the box under the hood as shown in the '98 manual. In any case find the relay, remove it,  and do that jump manuever to see if the starter will go.
If that doesn't activate the starter, check 40 Amp fuse G in the box. If that is good, then replacing the starter makes sense.
Write me back via the "thank and rate" tab, tell me what happened,  and I will give you a step-by-step for doing the change out of the starter which applies to the 3.2/3.5L engine. There are a number of subtleties required to pull that off. You would want a jack stand or two and a floor jack, as well as the usual car jack.
