Chrysler Repair: oil light comes on at low idle, oil pressure sender, high mileage

Question
2001 Pt Cruiser with 105,000 miles on it.

oil light comes on at low idel (750 - 800 rpms)  goes off always when engine revs up a little (100 rpm and up)

oil level is good, have to top it up a full quart every 1,000 miles, and have done so since day one.

i coast a lot to get the mileage up to 30 mpg.  so the oil light for me comes on even when i am not at a stop light.

i use a high mileage oil from valvoline now (5w-30w) because it has more detergents aand othe addtivies.

should i be concerned?

how do i stop the light from coming on?

Answer
I would not be too concerned, Phil. 5W-30 is very thin. If you wanted to get the light to shut off I would switch to 10W-30 especially in the summertime. You can have the oil pressure measured with a true gauge at the port where the oil pressure sender switch is located (usually next to the oil filter) if you want to verify that things are OK. But this is fairly common because the senders are sometimes pessimistic. You usually need about 5 psi at idle and 30 psi at 3,000 rpm to be within spec. If the sender is too pessimistic you can replace it, or use 10W-30.
