Chrysler Repair: Gearbox/Clutch on Chrysler Voyager 2.5, chrysler voyager, clutch pedal

Question
Hi!
We've just bought a Chrysler voyager 2.5 (1999) and it changes gear reasonably ok going up the gears, but it's hell trying to get down from 3rd into 2nd (you have to stop)and 1st is stiff also.

It seem a little better if you brake slightly first though, strangely enough.

Do you think it could be the clutch?
Much appreciated, Trish.

Answer
Hi Trish,
Wow, I haven't had a question about a manual transmission, ever! I didn't know they sold mini-vans so-equipped. Sure, if the clutch needs to be adjusted to insure complete disengagement that would be helpful. How much top play is there in the clutch pedal? Have you checked the level of gear oil in the box? I wonder if changing the gear oil might improve the function of the synchronizers? Is there a synthetic-type manual trans fluid you could substitute? Have you tried "double-clutching" when down shifting? Those are the thoughts that come to mind.
