Chrysler Repair: 97 Plymouth breeze odometer & tach, odometer reading, circuit board traces

Question
I have a 1997 plymouth breeze with a 2.4L engine.  The odd time while driving my tachometer and odometer will loose power and not display anything, but while the display is off, my odometer will continue counting my distance travelled. (I saw the odometer reading right before power was lost and when the display came back on the number had changed).  Only the tach and odometer loose power, and all other displays continue to function (ie. speedometer).  There is no specific situations that this occurs it seems to just cut power spontaneously.  Any ideas of what could be happening, i'm just curious about the problem.

Answer
Hi Jason,
The tach, odometer, and speedometer information is received as a digital signal from the powertrain controller and forwarded to the body control module. From there it it sent to the instrument cluster which displays the data. That is why the odometer continues to work thought not displayed. I don't see a simple explanation as to the loss of the odo and tach while the speedo continues. All require the same pair of fuses (7 in the box under the hood and 11 in the box under the dash) so that can't be the reason. The data may not being transmitted from the body module to the cluster or the cluster may be has a malfunction between the data reception and its display. You might take a look at the circuit board to see if there is a crack in the circuit board traces to those displays. Examing the data bus line requires a special instrument at a dealership so that circuit board examination is the only suggestion I can give you.
