Chrysler Repair: 85 Fifth Ave Alignment/Suspension Problem: sag, strut assembly, camber adjustment

Question
My Fifth Ave is resting on the tire on the front drivers side. There is no visible suspension/alingment problem. Is it possible for a recall that was done in '86 to just now go bad? The recall was for "Insufficant Positive Camber Adjustment" What could be causing this problem?

Answer
Hi Katy,
I am not certain whether the 5th Avenue is a front or a rear wheel drive vehicle, but I assume that it is a front wheel drive type. That means it has a spring/strut assembly that supports the body on the wheel/steering knuckle. A sag of as much as you describe sounds to me like the spring is broken or the spring cup on the strut is fatigued and allowed the spring to slip down to a lower position. I assume too that the wheel/tire are still in its normal nearly vetical position and not collaped which would otherwise suggest one of the control arms or the steering knucle is broken In any case this sort or a situation involves getting the car to a front end/suspension shop where they will quickly be able to tell you what part needs replacement. I doubt that anything related to camber adjustment problems would cause this sort of collapse.
This can only be handled by a suspension shop from what you tell me so I wouldn't bother with the "recall" question by taking it to a dealer. But you could inquire once you get it to the shop as to whether an insufficient positive camber would have caused it.
I hope you find it a fairly easy repair so you can keep this veteran vehicle on the road.
