Chrysler Repair: Chrysler T&C 1998: effect of removing catalytic converter?, gas mileage, cat converter

Question
Roland, you have been very accurate with all your answers. Here is another one.
I just took the Cat converter off my T & C what are the pros and cons of this? I brought the vehicle from the States. It is not mandatory in Mexico to have them on. The check engine light came on after a restart. Should I disconnect the battery and let the Comp reset? Or is there a way to tell the computer not to read that the Cat has a fault code. This vehicle will be made into a Mexican plated vehicle. I will say it has much better performance and mileage

Answer
Hi Mike,
The cons are or course more HC and possibly CO outputs. The pros are reduced back pressure. I can't think of anything else on that score. I suspect that your light is on because the downstream sensor is either no longer there/connected or at least not seeing what it expects to see on the Oxygen levelts. If you are getting better gas mileage then that is OK. I can't identify how to turn the light off other than to put in a false voltage in place of the sensor that fools the computer. It will erase if you remove the battery for a few minutes, but it no doubt will reappear if it isn't happy with the imput from that sensor wire.
That is about all I can offer.
