Answer
Hi Joe,
You have the means at your finger tip to find out what is wrong. Use the ignition key: turn it "on-off-on-off-on and leave it on", doing that in 5 seconds or less. Then watch the check engine light which will be "on" to begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause; the last two sets of flashes should be 5 in each. Then repeat for accuracy. Then group the numbers you count in pairs to form 2-digit numbers. The last such number will be 55. These are the fault codes that will tell you what is probably wrong. 55 means "end of readout". You can either go to www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html for a code translator, or write me back for specific advice.
That is the standard way to deal with a check engine light with a pre-96 vehicle.
