Answer
Hi Mark,
I have a '95 and a '98 manual, so I can't be sure which is appropriate to your '96. You would do well to ask the dealer which one yours is identical to. Here is the description for the '98:
If the lock cylinder is all that is being replaced then there is no need to disassemble anything, just be sure that the ignition switch is in the "run" position (which I assume you have had access to and are using). Install the key in the lock cylinder, turn key to the run position (notice that the retaining tabs can now be depressed). The shaft at the end of the lock cylinder aligns with the socket at the end of the housing. Make sure the socket is in the run position. Align the lock cylinder with the grooves in the housing. Slide the lock cylinder into the housing until the tabs stick through opening in the side of the housing which retains now the cylinder in the housing. Turn the key to off position and remove key.
You might want to disconnect the battery to start and then reconnect it when you are done, but I am always concerned to risk messing with that because of the theft system getting upset.
Let me know if you need to see the housing by removing the shrouds and I can tell you about that, but I assume you don't have to get inside.
If yours has the '95 type switch/housing: place the ignition switch in the lock position. I assume that the rest of the switch mechanism is assembled. Put cylinder in the lock position using the key. Remove the key. Then insert the cylinder into the housing until it bottoms. Insert key into lock cylinder. While gently pushing cylinder in toward ignition switch, rotate ignition key until to the end of travel.
