Chrysler Repair: 3.0L V-6, engine dies while driving, code 11, rotor shaft, engine computer

Question
I am not sure if I answered you correctly with my codes. They are 12-11-55. My engine size is 3.0. I really appreciate you answering my question about my van dying while driving. I have to go out of state in 2 days and any help you can give me is very much appreciated. I have had my van on a computer at a dealership and they could not find the problem. thank you again.

Answer
Hi Verna,
If the code 11 is still present (recheck the codes) then I suspect that the problem is with the photooptic "pick-up" located in the distributor cap (2 screws), positioned at the front-top of the engine. When that unit fails it produces a code 11. It is easy to replace: just remove the distributor, loosen the small screw on the neck of the rotor and remove it, remove protective cover housing (2 screws), remove the screw on the side of the distributor that holds the lead-in wire clamp to the body of the distributor, remove disk assembly screw from the center of the rotor shaft, remove the spacer from the shaft and then the disc and its two spacers (notice how these are "keyed" to the shaft), remove 3 screws that hold the photooptic sensor and its bushing. Then install the new unit by the reverse procedure. If you don't want to try it yourself a mechanic should be able to do this in half an hour. The only other explanation for that code would be a flaky wire connection from the sensor to the engine computer, so inspect that lead-in wire from the distributor to where is enters a harness of wires so you can't follow it anymore, looking for any signs of damage to the wires.
