Chrysler Repair: Intermittent engine miss when a/c is on, home mechanic, communication issue

Question
I own a 2001 Town & Country LXI minivan with the 3.3L flex fuel engine. The vehicle has 160,000 miles on it. I am having a problem with an intermittent engine miss only at idle speed and only when the a/c is on. Sometimes when it misses it will feel like two or three strong "bumps". Other times the engine will almost stall out and then idle fine. The air inside the vehicle is blowing cold like it should be. The MIL indicator has not come on with this problem. As I said, this only occurs when the a/c is on. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Rennie,
When the AC is called for there is a greater load put on the engine which is supposed to be corrected by the engine controller sensing that the AC has been activated and adjusting the idle air control motor. There could be a communication problem or the idle air control motor might need to be cleaned.
The communication issue could be checked by doing a fault code readout of the controller memory using a diagnostic readout box. That is something the Autozone Parts stores will do for free or you can look for a shop that offers a "special" for about $40. If you do this get the code number, name, what it means, what they say needs to be done, and how much it will cost. Then write back and we can check that out.
The idle air motor is on the throttle body, easy to remove and clean its tip and the passageway for air that it controls so it should be an inexpensive service for a shop that knows what it is doing or for a home mechanic.
Those are my thoughts, but let me know if you get more info or need specific information on the air motor.
