Chrysler Repair: 1999 Chrysler 300m sputtering, exhaust gas recirculation valve, exhaust gas recirculation

Question
I have a 1999 Chrysler 300m with about 92,000 miles.  Occasionally when I start the car, it sputters and acts as though it is going to stall.  If I accelerate the car, it usually goes away but on a few instances, it has stalled.  What do you think is the issue?

Answer
Hi Marie,
It could be something simple such as a throttle body throat and valve plate that needs to be cleaned, but it probably is not worth just trying various things unless you can do it yourself. My suggestion would be to see if there are any faults that the engine controller has recognized and stored in its memory as a code number. You may be able to get a free code readout at an Autozone Parts store or for about $40 at a garage with a "special" on such a readout. You also might have the ability to do that yourself using the ignition key so give this a try:"on-off-on-off-on and leave it on" doing that in an elapsed time of 5 seconds or less. Than watch in the odometer window to see if shortly thereafter the mileage reading is replaced by some 4-digit code numbers. If by whatever means you get such numbers, if they are obtained by others ask what they mean, what should be done, and how much it will cost. If you get the number by self-readout write back and tell me what you have learned by whatever means and we can compare notes and go forward from there. Other possibilities include a partially clogged exhaust gas recirculation valve or a faulty sensor. But the readout of the codes is the most efficient way to find a solution if there are such codes in the memory.
