Chrysler Repair: 1998 Dodge Caravan transmission problem: which fluid?, dodge caravan, chrysler corp

Question
Hi, Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I just wanted to clarify a bit what the mechanic told me. He said that the reason my transmission failed is that a part the factory installed (I think he said it was the part that holds the Pin in place) was the wrong size. I had been concerned that the wrong transmission fluid could have caused the problem because at between 113,000 and 114,000 mi., another mechanic had used Mercon transmission fluid when I had it changed, just as part of regular maintenance, not due to any problems.  On my receipt, it stated Mercon ATF3.  My car made it to 139,000 mi. before the transmission went out, and now this mechanic says he is planning to use Dexron ATF3.  He says it's alright to use because the brand doesn't matter, as long as it says ATF3.  Just wanted to make sure as he might begin work on my car today.
Thanks again for your help!

Answer
Hi Autumn,
All I can offer is that every Chrysler manual I have says no Dexron II, but I can't offer anything about Dexron ATF3.
Again, check with a dealer, or even ask them for the regional service manager's phone number of Chrysler Corp. to speak with someone who should really know.
Please let me know what you learn. Thanks
Roland
