Chrysler Repair: Engine Light on, 97 Sebring, pressure gage, readout device

Question
The  check engine light in my 1997 Sebring has been on and all of the fluids are to proper level.  Oil pressure gage rises when driving and drops very low while in idol but the light still stays on.  I thought it might be the thermostat but after reading the manual I found there is not a thermostat?????????????  I need help. Anyone know what it could be.  Thank you!!!!!

Answer
Hi Charlene,
The light on means that a fault in the pollution control function of the engine has been detected, given a code number, and stored in the engine control memory. There is a plug under the dash by the steering wheel into which a readout device is attached to find out what the code number is. You might be able to get a free readout at an Autozone Parts store or a 'special' at a shop might cost about $40. Once you get the code number, ask what it means, what they say needs to be done and for how much. Then write me back with the info and we can compare notes.
It is a possibility that if you use your ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave it on" doing that in 5 seconds or less that the number might appear in the odometer window of the speedometer, or the check engine light might begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause, then repeat the counts for accuracy. Then tell me the counts if indeed that happens or the numbers appear in the odometer window. This '97 was the year of transition so I can't be sure if it will readout this ignition key way or only by means of the plug under the dash.
So the bottom line is to find out the code number, etc., and if you don't like what they estimate the cost to be then write me back.
