Chrysler Repair: 2001 T&C: fuse 15 in PDC blows/trans problems, solenoid switches, digit code number

Question
Roland,

I just read a '98 TC answer from you that sounded similar to my problem.  I hope you have some further advice for my case.  Speedometer doesn't work, stuck in 2nd gear, all gears in dash light up after start, blown "EATX BATT 20A" fuse.
- First, replaced fuse and it ran OK for 10 miles -> blown fuse
- Second, replaced trans output sensor and fuse -> instant blown fuse with same symptoms

Any further thoughts?

Mike

Answer
Hi Mike,
That fuse is what powers the transmission controller and the 3 pressure switches and 4 solenoid switches in the control box on the transmission. Once the fuse blows, the trans controller shuts down and you loose all data and controls related to the transmission. There is possibly a short to ground in one of those several wires that carry all that power or a short in one of the switches or solenoids proper. You could go two ways with the diagnosis.
First: remove the fuse and read the resistance to ground that the cold side of the fuse itself is looking at with the ignition switch in the run position and see if it looks to be too low  (less than 2 ohms or so). If so, then I would pull the transmission relay in the same box and see if the resistance goes up significantly. If so, then the issue is with the solenoid/switch wiring harness, if not then the trans controller may be overdrawing the fuse. But because of cost I would hold off on replacing the controller.
If the resistance looks OK, then it would be good to see if you can identify what problem that has set a fault code in the transmission controller's memory. Because it goes into limp mode (2nd gear only) there should be such a code. Try to get a readout for free at an Autozone parts store or for about $40 at an independent shop. Based on the 4-digit code number you should be able to tell which switch or solenoid is failing or shorting to ground and then check its specific wires. If the wires prove OK then looking inside the solenoid box (on the side of the trans that faces the front of the van) would be in order to try and find the switch/solenoid that has failed and replace it.
Let me know what you learn by resistance measurements and any codes that come forward. I have the wiring diagrams for the '98 van which are probably identical to your 2001.
