Chrysler Repair: Chrysler T&C instrument lights, radio lamps, control lamps

Question
The instrument panel lights on my 99 Chrysler T&C went out.  I heard what sounded like relay contacts openning.  I checked the fuse and it is fine.  I want to replace the relay but I don't know where it is?

Answer
Hi Stuart,
I am limited to a '98 manual, but the wiring is probably similar if not identical. If you mean all the instrument panel lights, not just the cluster (e.g. radio lamps, heater control lamps, rear blower control switch illumination, etc.) then that involves several circuits, unless it is just a grounding problem (a black wire on pin 8 of a multipin ground block on the driver's side kick (cowl) panel just in front of his door opening might be disconnected so the current return to the battery is open).
The initiation for the lights is the multifunction headlamp switch. It signals the body control module (behind the fuse box under the dash and the two are connected together internally). Then the body control module supplies the power to all the lamps on the dash. (For example the cluster lamps should get their voltage from pin 8 of the lower left plug (one of four such plugs) at the top of the fuse box under the dash (orange wire, check to see if it shows voltage or not when the headlamps are "on"). If it shows voltage then the ground wire is bad, if it doesn't show voltage then for some internal reason the body controller is not responding to the signal from the headlamp switch (I hate to suggest replacing the body controller due to cost, however).
If you can tell me which fuse you suspect and found to be ok, and tell me where the clicking sound is eminating from I might be able to pinpoint the problem. There are several relays in the fuse box under the dash, so see if you can ID which one is clicking by feel. Also feel around the back side of the fuse box which is the body control module to see if it is clicking.
Let me know what you find from all these tests. Also, tell me if you have the daytime running lamp feature or not.

PS: If it is just the intrurment cluster lights that are out then I would check the plug at the back side of the cluster for a poor connection (pin 6, orange wire) which has been mentioned by others as a reason for the loss of those lights only.
