Answer
Hi Tammy,
That light means that a malfunction that might impact air pollution emission levels has occured. There is in the engine control computer a memory which stores a fault code number which tells what it thinks is the problem. You can either try to readout the memory to get the code using your ignition key, or you can have an electronic reader plugged into a receptacle under the dash which will do the same job. You might get a free readout at an Autozone Parts store if there is one near you, otherwise the independent shops should do a readout for $30-40. If you go that route get the number of the code, and ask what it means, and what they propose to repair and how much $, then write me back to compare notes with the manual. To possibly do the readout yourself, turn the ignition switch as follows: "on-off-on-off-on and leave it on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch for any change in the reading of the odometer window of the speedometer cluster to show a four digit number(s). Let me know what they are if you can get them that way. Take your time and we'll figure it out. I suspect is may be you exhaust gas recirculation valve, which may only need to be lubricated so it opens and closes more freely if the "chugging" seems to occur when you are idling or take your foot off the gas and try to coast. You can do that lub yourself if that is the problem code. Otherwise lets get the code numbers.
