Chrysler Repair: Engine stalls after warm up, wont restart until cools: 2.5L V-6, obd ii reader, crank sensor

Question
Would there be a fault code at a typical shop for a'97 Cirrus after sputtering? The owner gave me a low estimate based on a worse-case fuel pump which jumped by $400.00-can I get a report for this old a car? Ray

Answer
Hi Ray,
Yes there is no reason you can't get a fault code, the only question is how? Because this year was right at the edge between OBD-I and -II, try both ways; ignition key: "on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that switching in an elapsed time of 5 seconds or less. Then watch either the check engine light, which should remain "on" to begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause, then redo the procedure to make sure you have the counts correct. Then group them in pair in the order of appearance to form the two-digit fault codes. 55 is always the last, which means "end of readout". If the check engine light doesn't flash, then see if an numbers appear in the odometer window in place of the mileage reading. If neither works, then go to an Autozone store for a free readout from a plug that is under the dash, using an OBD-II reader. Most shops with a reader should do a readout for about $40. Then in any case you can go to the www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html for a translation, ask the Autozone what they mean, or write me back for an answer and advice.
I suspect you have a crank sensor that is breaking down as it warms up...this is quite common. But see what the codes say. Don't start throwing parts at the car without doing the readout; it is a waste of money. If you write back verify that you are dealing with the 2.5L V-6 engine.
