Chrysler Repair: Transmission Controller Fault Code: 0755, solenoid switches, chrysler cirrus

Question
I have a 2000 Chrysler Cirrus that downshifts abruptly.  Autozone checked the computer fault codes and came up with this: P1782(Manu. controlled transmission / P0755(Shift Solenoid B Malf. / P0700(Transmission Control System malf).
Any idea what the problem is and what it may take to fix it?

Answer
Hi Kwyn,
It appears to focus around one of the solenoid switches in the transmission called the 2/4 solenoid that is used to operate 2nd and 4th gear. This solenoid is in the box on the front side of the transmission and fortunately it can be serviced without removing the transmission and all the costs that would involve. It could be the solenoid itself or the wiring between the transmission controller and the solenoid that is causing the fault. There is a specific procedure for sorting out what exactly is wrong that a competent transmission mechanic can follow. I would try to find a good independent shop that knows the Chrysler electronic transmissions or a reputable Chrysler dealer. You might want to speak to two such shops and tell them the codes and ask for a repair estimate based on the codes so you have something to compare. The 0700 code means that the trans controller has recognized the fault and turned on the check light. I don't have a specific reference to the 1782's meaning, but I believe the 0755 that I described above is the basic issue.
So it probably will take some diagnostic time and then what ever repair is needed should not be too time consuming or costly of parts. Finding the knowledgeable shop/mechanic to do the job efficiently is no doubt the key. The Chrysler dealer may have an advantage in having the diagnostic test tools, but then again so might a well-equipped independent shop. So inquire and use your instincts as to who appears most competent and trustworthy.
