Chrysler Repair: hard starting in cold weather, why?, intake air temp, coolant temp

Question
Hi Roland: My girlfriend has a 90 lebaron that runs great but has an intermittent problem of not starting. sounds starved for fuel when this happens. problem is that it doesn't always happen but usually when the engine is cold. Do you think this is an egr deal or possibly a what?
thanks in advance

Answer
Hi Keith,
The egr was not used in '90 except in the 2.5 non-turbo (all states), and the 2.2 turbos and 3.0L V-6 sold in California. So if that applies, check the valve stem for freedom of movenment and lube with WD-40 as needed.
Other than that, the coolant temp sensor is the main controller of mixture. It should read 7,000 to 13,000 ohms at 70F (and a good deal higher at 32F, but I don't have a spec.) and 700-1000 ohms at 200F. On the 4 cyl engine that sensor is on the thermostat housing box between spark plugs 3 and 4, and on the 6 cyl engine it is next to the thermostat housing on the top of the engine where the top radiator hose enters. It has 2 wires and a removable plug, lift tab gently. There may be an intake air temp sensor on the intake manifold of the turbo and a throttle body temp sensor for the 2.5L non-turbo that has the same specs but those are mainly for warm start purposes.
Those would be the prime candidates for a cold start problem.
