Chrysler Repair: Overheated engine: now bubbling sound, sludge, cylinder head gasket, compression chambers

Question
My car overheated the other day. have refilled water when cooled but no have brown mud like gunge coming out of the water tank and radiator. The car runs but can hear a loud bubbling noise coming from the engine when driving. My friend checked the oil and there is no water there. There is no heat coming from the heater but the fans are working.

Answer
Hi Lynsey,
The combination of bubbling sounds (exhaust gas in the cooling system), no water circulation through the heater(continued loss of coolant), and brown gunge, and the fans coming on all suggest to me that there is a leaking cylinder head gasket such that there is communication between the compression chambers, the cooling system and the oil system (probably the source of the brown gunge). I would not drive the car for fear of doing real damage to the mechanical components. A head gasket is one thing, but there is no need to risk destroying the engine. The fans come on because the engine is running too hot as the result of the inability to circulate coolant. The coolant is probably blowing out the tail pipe. You didn't say which year/engine you have so I can't offer much advice except to see if you can get some estimates and references on a good shop to replace the head gasket. If it is nearby, you might drive it, after filling it with water again and if the oil is not contaminated with water, but otherwise it would be wiser to have it towed for the repair. A head gasket alone is not a reason to despair, just find an honest shop who will stand behind the repair.
