Chrysler Repair: 97 Voyager stalling, exhaust gas recirculation valve, exhaust gas recirculation

Question
We have a 97 Voyager that we replaced the map sensor and throttle but its still stalling. What else could be the problem?

Answer
Hi Mark,
Try to readout the engine controller for fault codes. Use the ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less. Then watch the check engine light (which will remain "on") to begin to flash, pause, flash, pause, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat to be sure you have a correct count. Then combine the number in pairs in the order they came out thus forming the two-digit fault codes. The last code is always 55 which means end of readout. The go to www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html for a translation or write me back and I'll tell you what they mean and what to do.
You didn't mention which engine you have (there are 4 different possibilities) so I need to know that before going much futher. But the other thing you can check is the exhaust gas recirculation valve which is located in a pipe between an exhaust manifold and the throttle body. It has a round body and round top and a flange in between the two with openings on either side. Inside the opening you will see a rod with a circumferential slot in it. Take the tip of a screwdriver and try to move the rod in and out against spring tension in one direction. Feel whether the rod comes to a dead stop via the spring. If not, then it may be hanging up ajar which is a common cause of stalling. Take some penetrating spray (WD-40) and spray the stem where it enters the valve body and move the stem some more until it closes firmly. Then try and start the engine.
Let me know what you observe and we'll go from there if this doesn't solve the stalling.
