Chrysler Repair: failed emissions test, coolant temp, smog test

Question
hi ive got a grand voyager 3.3le (r)1997 it failed mot on high co emissions on fast idle tests. 1st test @ 1950-2250rpm was 1.03% should be =<0.3%, second test 1950-2250rpm was 1.17% should be =<0.3%. natural idle test passed 650-950rpm 0.45% should be =<0.5%, hc fast idle test passed and were 55ppm and 69ppm should be =<200ppm. there is also a symbol looks like an upside down y readings were 0.975 and 0.968 should be between 0.97-1.03, so one passed and one failed 1st and 2nd fast idle tests, have you got any ideas where i should look for the problem, and how do i get error codes?, thankyou peter

Answer
Hi Peter,

I believe that in '97 you could still get the codes with the ignition key: "on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less. Then watch either the odometer window for codes OR watch the check engine light (which remains On when the key is in the on position but the engine isn't running) to begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat to verify that you have numbers accurately. Then group them together in pairs in the order they appeared to form the two-digit fault codes. The last number should be 55 = end of readout. Then write back or go to www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html for a translation.

That is probably the best place to start. High CO means a too rich mixture that could be due to a faulty coolant temp sensor, or oxygen sensor or ? so getting the codes is the way to go. If you don't get codes that way, then a readout with a readout box is necessary. Autozone stores will sometimes do that for free, otherwise look around for a sale on that service. You can often get it for $40 or less.

I'm not certain what the upside down y is, but you could ask at the smog test place. Good luck and let me know once you have the codes, and I can help with what to do.
