Chrysler Repair: 94 Lebaron 3.0L: fuel pump not running, fuel pump relay, maxed out

Question
I have a 94 Lebaron, 3.0 V-6. It acted like it ran out of gas, (and probably did) but would not restart after putting in gas. It does get spark, and will run for a few seconds if I spray starting fluid in the throttle housing. I couldn't hear the fuel pump run for a second or two when I turned the key to "on" nor could I hear the fuel injectors pulse like I could before. The only code I get is 55. I have replaced the fuel filter. Does the fact that I'm getting spark rule out the ASD relay?

Answer
Hi Eric,
If you are getting spark, that means the ASD is working.
There is however the issue of the fuel pump and the fuel pump relay to consider, since you don't hear it run for 1 second. The fuel pump relay is the third from the outside.
Both it and the ASD should click on-off for a second when you turn the key to the run position. (You may have to sense this by touch). The socket has 5 pins, 21 most inboard, 25 most outboard, and 22,23,24 are midline from rear to front. 21 should have 12v when you turn the ignition switch to run. 25 should be grounded momentarily when you turn the ignition switch to run, because those are the actuation coil contacts of the relay. 22 should have 12v on it all the time. 24 is the wire that goes to the fuel pump. 22 and 24 are therefore the internal switch contacts of the relay. If you jump between 22 and 24 you should hear the fuel pump run. If you have 12v on 22 and you don't hear the fuel pump run when you jump to 24 then your pump is probably bad unless the wire from 24 to the pump is open*. If you hear it run, then the question is why isn't the fuel pump relay closing. It could be the relay or the grounding isn't being done by the pcm.
Anyhow, those are some things to check.
Let me know what you find out and how it works out, please.
You can reach me directly thru the "rate the expert" tab if I'm shown as maxed out.

*If you only put a gallon or two of gas in the tank you might try adding some more before giving up on the fuel pump.
