Chrysler Repair: My 98 Voyagers heating system, plymouth voyager, air streams

Question
98 Plymouth Voyager Rallye
About a year ago I had a failure with my A/C compressor -- the wheel that the belt turns on had seized. I had to replace it with the wheel on a bracket solution instead of a new AC compressor  due to cost. Recently my heating is not working. reading other articles it seems that the A/C compressor also charges the system that controls the vents and the hot-cold slider. is there a way to "recharge" this system without buying an A/C compressor or do I really need to re-install a compressor to get my heating back?

I really appreciate your help on this. Please let me know what can be done.

Answer
Hi David,
I don't believe that the absence of refrigerant in the evaporator unit under the dash has any impact on the heater function which is from a separate heater core. What may be the case is that the blend air door (that mixes the hot and cold air streams to produce the desired temp) which is operated by the slider is not moving due to a detachment of the cable from the door lever and all the air is going thru the a/c evaporator side only. If you are getting hot water flow through the heater (check the two hoses that go thru the firewall are both hot) then there is a source of heat in the distribution box. What you need is to get the blend door to send incoming air across the heater core rather than by-passing it. There may be two doors if there is a passenger side adjustment separated from the driver side. So take a look under the dash and see if you can spot anything moving when you use the temp slider and if not check out this possibility. I have the '98 manual that shows the system and we can get into specifics about the blend air door or I can send you the pages that show the unit/door via xerox copy and postal mail.
