Chrysler Repair: 97 sebring fueling problem, overflow problem, hose clamps


Question
i just went outside to pull the fuse to the ABS and it says in my manual that cavity 2 is the fuse w/ the ABS but my manual does not seem to match up for some reason and i'm trying to count it out to make sure i'm getting the right one but the fuses are not numbered in order just by the color and number on them...any help?

when filling my tank up with gas it always overflows even when the tank is empty...i can pump about 2 gallons and -thathen it will overflow and i have to pump about 0.2 gallons at a time then stop and continue and it takes about 8min just to pump 13gallons...any suggestions?..also is there a fuse or something you can pull out to get rid of the ABS system?    -thanks

I have a suggestion on the overflow problem when filling the empty tank. My Sebring sedan manual shows there is a narrow vapor return hose/tube that runs parallel to and on the external surface of the filler pipe proper between the filler opening and the top of the tank. It appears to be metal from the opening down to where it bends and then it is a rubber hose for the last section of the run to the top of tank. If that rubber hose was compressed or somewhere along the "run" an obstruction in it then the vapors in the tank could not escape up to the opening where it is sucked out by the fuel recovery system at the nozzle of the gas pump, thus pressurizing your tank as you fill it and preventing the fuel from entering the tank without vapor pushing back on the incoming fuel. Thus reverse burping occurs. I would go to the rubber hose section of that vapor pipe and open up the hose clamps and check for obstruction of the hose and the pipe to which it is attached using a wire probe and also examine the rubber hose for whether it might be mechanically compressed as an alternative explanation for why the vapor pressure builds up inside your tank rather than being relieved by that vapor return connection.
Please let me know if you find this to be the case. The Sebring convert manual doesn't have a figure showing this vapor return path, in fact it doesn't even have a figure showing the fill system, so I can't be sure, but I assume it is the same.

Sorry to hear of more problems with the car. I don't know of any design reasons for the tank being hard to fill. Maybe there is an obstruction in the pipe that runs between the opening and the tank, but then that should not allow you to put two gallons in quickly. I am at a loss about that one.
On the ABS, fuse #2 in the power distribution center under the hood is for the ABS controller (this is from the '98 convertible manual, so check that is also the case in your '97), so if you pulled that one it should only disable the ABS.

Hi Colt,
The 20 amp fuse is at the very far end of the box, next to fuse #1 which is 10 amp. The pins for the #2 fuse may be numbered 55 - 65.
On the Tune up question, if you mean simply changing the plugs which is all there is no days to do a tune up, the 2,4,6, plugs are no problem, but the 1,3,5 in the rear are a bit of a task. Go to my previously answered question list and find one on 5/30/05 about this very question and what is involved. I imagine you would save a good deal of money by doing it yourself.
