Chrysler Repair: malfunction indicator light, malfunction indicator light, flash pause

Question
The malfunction indicator light came on, but the engine sounds fine.  Is there anything that I can do to make the light go out.

Answer
Hi Wayne,
The engine can sound fine but the devices to minimize air pollution can be out of order which is one of the main causes for the MIL to come on. If your vehicle is pre-1998 you may be able to read that light for a code about what is at fault. Turn the ingition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that is 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the MIL which will be 'on' to begin go flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause, then repeat the readout to make sure have the numbers correct. Group the numbers into pairs in the order of readout to form the two-digit fault codes. If the MIL light doesn't do that, then instead watch to odometer window to see if a code number(s) appear there. In either case, go to www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html for a translation of the codes. If neither way gives you a code, then go to a parts store such as Autozone for a free readout. Otherwise a shop will do it for a fee.
Write me back for suggestions as to what to do to fix the fault. But tell me the year and model of the vehicle.
