Chrysler Repair: Engine wont crank: starter motor?, safety interlock switch, starter motor

Question
My car was running fine and then when I went back to go to work it would not start but the lights and everything else works just won't start. could it be the starter and if so where is it located and how do you get to it.

Answer
Hi Jody,
I assume that you are not getting any action from the starter motor. If that is not the case tell me so.
I would do two things:
Open the hood and the power distribution center box (rectangular, just behind the radiator on the driver's side of the car) which contains fuses and relays. Have a helper try to start the car while you listen for the sound of a soft click to come from one of the relays in the box. Also listen for a loud click coming from behind the engine where the starter motor is located. If you hear the latter than the former is also going to click, but not vice versa. Also, try moving the gear shift slightly off detent position in either direction from the park or the neutral position because there is a safety interlock switch that would prevent actuating the starter motor if it were slightly out of adjustment. With answers to those tests I may be able to suggest whether your battery is just run down or there is something wrong with the starter motor. Also mention which engine is in you car.
