Chrysler Repair: Transmission Error Codes 36,51, 52 or 53, plymouth sundance, fuse block

Question
Thank you. This is actually my daughters car, she is out of state.  The dealer reported error codes 12, 36, 51 and either 52 or 53, she could not remember which.  They wanted to rebuild at an extreme expense (more than the car is probably worth)
Can you fax the info. from the manual to me at 503-233-8626? This would save time and postage.
Thanks again.

Question -
1994 Plymouth Sundance Duster V6 Automatic. I am having difficulty finding a listing of transmission error codes. All I have found is engine DTC's.  When cold, the transmission does not always upshift into high, unless engine is turned off and restarted.  Sometimes harsh downshift occurs when stopping and the above cycle repeats.

Hi Terry,
I have 16 pages from the '94 Chrysler shop manual that I can xerox and postal mail to you. Have you tried to get the codes readout? It takes a Chrysler DRB II and the 6-pin data link (bus) plug (two rows of three) that you attach to a blue socket that is under the dash near the fuse block.
If you can get a readout let me know the codes and I can tell you what the deal is. Otherwise tell me a postal mailing address and I'll send you the pages. If you could send me back a little less than $2 worth of postal stamps to cover the costs that would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Terry,
Those codes do not bode well. The 12 is the same as the 12 code for the engine, e.g. battery disconnected in the recent past, no problem.
But 36 accompanying a 51 and either a 52 or 53 means that the problem is not electrical and is either mechanical internal or hydraulic (that is the 36 meaning) and then the 52 or 53 means there is a gear ratio error in 2nd or 3rd gear and the manual attributes those codes ONLY to an internal transmission problem (51 posits the possibility of the failure of one of the two speed sensors or of the trans control module itself). No other cause for the 52 or 53 is offered. So when you couple 36 with 52 or 53 it appears to me that there is something broken in the internal mechanical aspects of the trans. Becasue of the cost of a rebuild it may be worth trying to find another shop with a reader that can couple with the underdash plug and give you a second readout/opinion. I don't have a fax machine and I expect it will cost $1/page to do it a copy center. But I can fax the page for 36 and for the 50's gear ratio codes if you will reimburse the costs.
If the trans has over 100k miles since new/rebuild it is not unusual for this to happen to that electronic transaxle.
I wish it were more hopeful. You have checked the fluid level in the trans, and if needed only add Chrysler brand fluid? If the alternative is junking the vehicle, then you might try draining the trans and changing the filter on the chance that it might improve things. When the pans are dropped for draining the mechanic can inspect for debris to be present in the pans, which would corroborate the need for the rebuild if debris were present.
