Chrysler Repair: 3,3L V-6 serpentine belt help, tensioner pulley, plymouth voyager

Question
My 1991 Plymouth Voyager SE 3.3 V6 has ripped another belt. So I replaced the noisy and broken smooth pulley.

But it is shredding the new belt again. So I checked the tensioner pulley and it is ok and not broke like the other pulley I already replaced but the noise is comming from that area around the alternator. Yet I took the bad belt off and spun these items ( all pulleys ) and no noise or sway.

If I put another belt on (a third belt) it will happen again. So what can I do?

Answer
Hi Laurence,
I suspect that the plane of the pulley one of the devices driven by the belt is either shifted in/out or tilted to the side compared the planes of all the other pulleys which are probably congruent with oneanother. I would take a straight edge and lay it across the face of each of the pulley that is driven by the belt and look carefully to find the device that is out of alignment with the rest. Because you mention the alternator it is worth looking at that one very carefully. The alternator and the tensioner and the power steering pump are all mounted on a single bracket and there is an accessory support bracket between that multi-purpose bracket and one of the exhaust manifold nuts in order to strengthen and secure the bracket in place and prevent it from being torqued out of alignment. Check to make sure that support bracket is in place and secured well to the manifold and to the multi-purpose bracket. I believe you will find some one pulley is out of alignment and that be repositioning or tightening the mounting of the device you will solve the belt wear problem.
