Chrysler Repair: Cooling fans wont shut off: 98 van. Disconnect bat.?, radiator fan shroud, chassis frame

Question
I have my coolant fans running all the time, even when the car is off and it is draining my battery. Now I disconnect the battery cable when not in use so the coolant fans can stop running. I plan to get it check sometime this week.  How long and how safe is it to contiune to disconnect the battery cable and put it back when I need to drive my 1998 Plymonth Voyager?

Answer
Hi Chad,
It won't do any harm to disconnect the battery, in fact it is the smart thing to do until you can have the fan relay replaced at a dealership. That relay has been so troublesome that it was recalled to be replaced for free,I believe. It is located on the chassis frame channel on the left side of the engine compartment down low, adjacent to the radiator fan shroud. Your relay has failed with the contact points permanently connected (the switch is stuck "on") rather than disconnecting when you shut off the van as it should. So call the dealer and see if you can't get it replaced for free under the factory recall provision. If not, then you can either pay for them to change it or buy a new one at a parts store and replace it yourself. It is a simple unplug, remove screw mounting, plug in, remount job you can do yourself if you have to.
