Chrysler Repair: 96 Sebring Alarming Intermitantly, push button locks, front doors

Question
Hi Roland:

We have a '96 Sebring, 4 cyl 5 speed.  The car alarm goes off intermittently when either of the doors or truck lid is opened.  Is there a way to permanently disable this alarm?  Not looking to putting much money into the car.

Thanks

Koz

Answer
Hi Koz,
The theft alarm system is integrated into the body control module in such a way as to make it virtually impossible to disconnect that feature without compromising other systems that are also handled by the module. To avoid setting the alarm it appears to me that you need to manually lock the front doors using the push button locks, and avoid using the key or the remote if you have one to secure the car.
When you say that the alarm occurs when either door is opened or the trunk lid is opened I assume that you mean that immediately before doing the "opening" using a key that the theft system was indeed armed. Correct?
If that is the case then there are 5 possible malfunction reasons for that to happen:
The switch at either front door lock cylinder is defective
The switch at the trunk lid lock cylinder is defective
The connection to the switch is defective
The harness from the connection is defective
The engine controller itself is defective.
So my best suggestion is to never use the key to lock the front doors so as to avoid arming the theft system. You might also check the owner's manual for anyother strategies.
