Chrysler Repair: 1994 Chrysler LHS Spontaneous Alarm, 1994 chrysler lhs, power door locks

Question
My 1994 LHS has a degrading Alarm system. The keyless entry modules became intermittent, and now work rarely. I always keep the LHS in "valet" mode, and just use my keys to enter/exit. I have no problem with that. The car is old, and I expect problems. But, now the alarm sometimes activates spontaneously. Day or night, it doesn't seem to make much difference. A while back, I had some surgery and didn't need the car, so  disconnected the battery for a couple of weeks. when I reconnected it, the spontaneous alarms seemed to disappear for a while, but they have now returned. Do you have any ideas? Can the alarm system be permanently deactivated? (Where is the alarm module located? I'd like to check and clean the electrical connections.)

Answer
Hi Mike,
The theft alarm is incorporated in the body control module located on the right cowl panel, to the right of the passenger's right leg at the level of the nearby dash, behind some cloth which needs to be cut to get to the module. You remove the end cap from the dash which then lets you remove the carpeting and access the cloth covering. The module has three plugs, and the theft alarm wires are on the black plug, pins 3, 10, and 24 in terms of the disarming wires. Other parts of the system (e.g. power door locks) are handled by other plugs' wires).
Because there is not a separate theft module you can't disable the function. Always staying in the valet mode is a smart practice. You might do well to check all three plugs for corrosion, dirt, water that could give a false impression to the unit the the power locks had been activated.
One possible explanation another Chrysler owner told me about recently was that voltage spikes (I assume momentary disconnects) from his battery had caused the theft system to arm spontaneously. So you might check the battery clamps and ground wire connections from the negative post clamp wire. If the battery is getting near the limit of its warranty period then you might want to consider replacing it.
