Chrysler Repair: Neon 95 rack and pinion, power steering racks, state safety inspections

Question
hello, I have a dodge neon 95 2.0L DOHC. My rack and pinion is broken then I must changed. I would like to know if I must buy a rack and pinion sport or standard. I know only that it is a 3.2 turns. If I do not give you enough informations so that you can answer me, could you say to me how I would know which I must buy. Thank you very much.

Answer
For best results you should buy the same part that came out of the car.  However, there were some neons that came without power steering and the manual steering rack USED to be sold by the dealer.  There were so few built that you won't be able to get it from the dealer anymore.  Rumor was that an aftermarket parts store such as Advance, Napa, or the like carried the manual rack.

Removing power steering from your vehicle may cause your vehicle to no longer pass local or state safety inspections.

In the 1998 year model they made two different power steering racks.  The 2/4 door highline SOHC and the 2/4 door sport/expresso dohc both came with a power steering gear with an 18:1 ratio.  The R/T and ACR models came with a 16:1 ratio giving you a bit quicker of response.  While you do have a 95 model I was bringing the later models to your attention to let you know there were options later on along the lines of your questioning.

If you are looking for a slight upgrade in steering performance you can ask for an R/T or ACR rack in place of the Highline/sport/expresso rack you are currently running.
