Answer
Hi Mark,
I would recheck the egr to make sure that it is closing tight when at idle. Push the slot in the valve stem toward the valve with the tip of a screwdriver. You may have too much crud inside the valve for it to close tightly so if you haven't done that yet you might want to remove the valve from the pipe and inspect the passageway.
Another possibility is a discontinuity in the throttle position sensor. That is a three-wire plug on the axis of the throttle butterfly. Put an ohmmeter between the middle pin and either side pin of the socket and gradually open the throttle and observe for a smooth change in resistance with no discontinuities in the reading.
Finally I would check for fault codes. "On-off-on-off-on and leave on"  within 5 seconds or less using the ignition switch. The check engine light will be 'on' and then begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause, the last sets of flashes will be 5 in each. Repeat to be sure you have the counts correct. Then group the numbers in pairs to form two digit code numbers. The last number will be 55 which means end of readout.
Then go to www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html
for a translation of the codes. A code may tell you what the problem involves, but doesn't always give specfic direction
