Chrysler Repair: 91 LeBaron Wont Start - Codes 12 and 21, starter motor, lebaron

Question
Hello, I have read through a lot of the answers on here for my problem, but there is something I still have a question about. My 91 LeBaron (V6) won't turn over, but the lights and accessories work. I hear the click of the solenoid, but nothing else. The diagnosis codes are 12 and 21. 12 is supposed to mean battery was disconnected. So, if the battery is disconnected, why am I still getting power to the lights, etc? Any help would be very appreciated. Thank You!

Answer
Hi Brian,
The tense of the verb is important, was not is. This 12 just means that sometime in the past 50-100 off-on cycles of the key the battery was disconnected, it does not mean that it is currently disconnected. In fact if it were disconnected there would be no code readout.
I believe that you either have a discharged battery that is strong enough to power the lights and electronics but not the starter motor, or the cable connections to the battery and or the starter motor are loose or corroded, or that the starter motor is no longer working. The loud click means that the starting circuit is good except that there is either insufficient voltage/current to turn the motor, the motor is bad, of the heavy current carrying wires are not connected cleanly. So I would begin by removing the - post clamp at the battery, then check both ends of the + post clamp at the battery and the starter motor for being clean and tight. Then reattach the - post wire and try it again. If still no cranking then I would recharge the battery unless it is beyond its warranty life in which case it probably cannot be recharged sufficiently to make the motor crank. If that doesn't do it then replacing the battery and after that the starter motor is the sequence to follow in this situation.
