Chrysler Repair: starter just clicks when hot, chrysler dealer, solinoid

Question
I have a 2001 V6 Concorde.  It usually starts quite easily.  After driving it in hot weather and turning it off, and then trying to restart it within 30 minutes, it just has a hard click as if the solinoid is pulling in but the starter will not turn over the engine.  If I wait awhile, time depending on the outside temperature, it starts up immediately.  I have taken it into a local mechanic who installed a rebuilt starter twice, but it just happened again today.  What can it be other than another rebuilt starter?

Answer
Hi Ed,
The balance of the starter motor circuit, once the solenoid clicks, is pretty straightforward: Big red wire from the + post of the battery to the starter motor, black ground wire from the cylinder head back to the - post of the battery, and the battery itself. If the battery is not approaching the end of its life and the specific gravity of the electroyte in the cells shows it to be charged, if both connections on the two wires mentioned above are shiney and tight then you should get action from the motor. About the only other possibility is that there is/should be a heat shield mounted near the motor to protect it from the exhaust system nearby which has been inadvertantly left off sometime in the past. Starters often need such a heat shield but only a Chrysler dealer parts counter can verify whether your car should have one and then if so you can see what it looks like on their computer and then check on your car for its presence. So those are the points I would suggest that you check.
