Chrysler Repair: DRB Code P 1776: solenoid valve latched in LR, solenoid valve, chrysler dealer

Question
I have a 1998 Grand Voyager that had the Service Engine Soon light come on for a short period of time (couple of hours during highway driveway in mountains). The Chrysler dealer I stopped at scanned the codes and said it indicated that the "SSV Latched in LR position". They said it was probably not serous and I could wait till I get home to have it serviced. Right now the transmission seems to rev higher than normal before it switches gears. Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Neal,
I believe that this is due to either a bad low/reverse switch, the relay for the trans not closing its contact points as required, a problem with the switch sense circuit, of the controller itself being faulty. In any case it should not require extensive transmission work to repair it. Don't accept a recommendation for a "rebuild"; I would go somewhere else if a shop says that is what is needed. In all likelihood it can be done by servicing the wiring, or the solenoid box on the trans but nothing further than that. You are likely operating in limp-in mode that protects against damage until you get it serviced, but that means you are driving in 2nd gear if that is the case. Thus the higher rpm that you noted. So when you can get it to a reliable trans shop tell them the code number and if they don't have a diagnotic box or know what to do let me know and I can send you a 4 page diagnostic workup from the Chrysler manual that explains how to determine which of the above reasons explains the situation.
