Chrysler Repair: 98 T&C Service Engine Soon code P1776, solenoid switch, internet hits

Question
Hello, my 98 Town & Country LXi has just started having transmission related problems at 140k. The Service Engine Soon light has been going off and on recently. I was on the interstate today and noticed the RPMs at 4000 while doing 55mph. I think it was stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear. Anyway, I went to my local repair shop and they pulled a code of P1776 and told me it meant "Manufacturer Controlled Transmission" or something like that. He said it was my xmission going bad and would need a new one. I have tried to find a listing of other tips/hints for P1776. Many internet hits show this code but it always means something else and is not an exact fit for my make/year/model. I don't think P1776 is a universal code for all mopar or chysler transmissions. The local Autozone said that P1776 means "Ignition retard request duration fault". I don't think that is correct since I have not had any ignition problems but there is an obvious transmission problem. Maybe someone out there has a book or can refer me to a url. I may run it in the local Chrysler shop and see what they tell me but I have an idea it will be expensive. Any ideas ? Is flushing/replacing the fluid a good idea ? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh, btw, the local shop said a rebuilt transmission is between $2500 and $2900... OUCH ! Thx, Bill

Answer
Hi Bill,
I am surprised about the possibility that the code is not universal or at least rather similar across the model lines of the Corporation. That is the first time I had heard ot that type of uncertainty. The only reference I have is from a recent 2004 Chrysler transmission diagnostic procedures manual for the Cirrus/Stratus and Sebring but the van has a virtually identical electronic transaxle.
According to that source the meaning of the code is "solenoid switch valve latched in the LR position". There is shown in the manual a 10-step test procedure to sort out why the latching is occuring that uses the diagnostic readout box III. While most of it sounds like jibberish to me because I haven't worked on these electronic transaxles I was encouraged to learn that none of the conclusions point to the necessity of a rebuild.
The worst is some part chaging in the solenoid pack which is external and can be handled without removing the trans from the vehicle. My inclination would be to go to either a Chrysler dealer shop if they have a good reputation on trans servicing or try to find an independent (non-franchise) shop that has a good reputation and experience with the Chrysler EATX. On the trans fluid change question, I am uncertain whether that has any relevance. It is usually attempted when there is a more consequential fault like slippage due to clutch wear, etc, that carry the possibility of the $2-3K repair. I can xerox and postal mail you the pages that I am describing. I would say that a good way to test the integrity and knowledge of a shop is to ask them what is the meaning of the 1776 and can they give you a prognosis or the cost of a prognosis. I would write off anyone who says a rebuild is in order (such as tthe local shop).
I would appreciate learning what happens.
