Chrysler Repair: check engine light comes on when a/c requested, compressor clutch, postal mail

Question
I recently bought a 1999 Crysler Cirrus.  The check engine light came on when I turned on my air conditioner.  I am trying to see if someone can tell me why this happened.

Answer
Hi Shalonda,
The coincidence of the light with the a/c request probably means that a fault of some sort associated with the a/c circuitry has been detected by the engine control computer.
That could be verified by reading out the memory of the computer for the presence of such a fault code. Some chain autoparts stores will do such a readout for free (e.g. Autozone). That would corroborate my suspicion. There are several possible reasons for the light: a failure of the a/c clutch relay, the a/c clutch, or the wiring between them and betweeen them and the computer, or a failure of the refrigerant pressure sensor of the a/c system. I presume that the a/c is not working, correct? It is probably the relay or the compressor clutch that is the problem and if you have a volt-ohmmeter and a troubleshooting instruction you can figure out what is the trouble. I can send you by postal mail a xerox copy of the instruction if you want to try to work on the problem.
So if you want to try that, give me you mailing address.
Otherwise, that is what I believe is going on, and you can verify that with a code readout which might be good to do first so that the proper instruction for the specific code can be provided to you. If it does relate to the a/c there is no urgent need to deal with it, save for your comfort in the summer.
