Chrysler Repair: 16, sebring lxi, highway traffic safety

Question
Hi Roland, Having read about your problem with rims I have just been informed by my tire dealer that the rims on my 2001 Sebring LXI which were the 16" chromed ones are now unsafe as the chrome plating has peeled off inside( a stupid process anyway) and is now rottong the metal from the inside. As I am now installing new tires at 61,000 km the tire dealer is coating the inside of the rims with latex, mounting a new set of Michelins (it came with michelins originally) and hopefully will help the problem.
Previously, not under warranty I paid my Chrysler dealer to de-mount the tires and sand away some pitting but wihout much sucess.  Hopefully if you have heard of any secret Mopar warranty or solution I would love to hear from you. I am located in Toronto Canada but I would think Chrysler would apply the same treatment to all customers in USA or Canada, Regards, Dave McKee

Answer
Hi Dave,
No, I haven't heard of any recall for those rims. I believe another questioner asked about this earlier, but without a search by topic I would not easily find that query. I did check with the Hational Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall search and didn't find anything about the rims (www.NHTSA.GOV). You might try calling Daimler/Chrysler in Detroit to see if they have been moved to do anything about this issue. If this poses a safety problem you might want to file a report with NHTSA and thus start the ball rolling toward an eventual recall.
