Chrysler Repair: Alternator replacement 94 Le baron, starter generator, inch pounds

Question
I need to replace the alternator of my 94 Le Baron. I am reasonably mechanical but not any way mechanic. I am concerned about the serpentine belt and having a problem with the tensioning this once I have the new alternator in place. Could someone advise me if this is a job that I should attempt, and if so can you give me a step by step procedure

Answer
Hi Derek,
It is a very straightforward task. The tensioning of the serpentine is automatic, done by a spring loaded tensioner pulley that is located directly below the alternator. To remove the tension you just put a socket on the tensioner bolt and rotate it clockwise with a ratchet or breaker bar handle. Before you do that, make yourself a sketch of the pathway of the belt just for reference in case it comes off the other pulleys.
Procedure:
remove the - post clamp from the battery
remove the drive belt (as above)
remove the mounting bolts and separate the generator from the mounting bracker
remove the electrical connectors
remove the alternator from the vehicle
Install is the reverse
Tighten mounting bolts to 40 foot-pounds
electrical nuts: small to large: 25 to 75 inch-pounds
 or by reasonable feel.
I would recommend either getting your present unit rebuilt or exchanging it for a rebuilt at a local starter/generator specialty shop rather than getting one from an aftermarket parts store. I just like knowing who actually did the work and that they stand behind what they do.
