Chrysler Repair: 91 Chryler N/Yorker, chryler, lock switch

Question
Roland,

I have a 1991 Chrysler N/yorker, and the Factory Alarm system is set.  I do not have the key remote that orgianally came with the car. The car will just crank, as if the fuel pump was shut down.  I even tried using the key the doors to reset the alarm, but no luck.  How can I disable the alarm to drive tgha car again?  Isn't there a way to reset it?  I know you can't progam a new remote until the Alarm System is unset. Can you tell me what I can do to disar the alarm?

Thanks
scott

Answer
Hi Scott,
The anti-theft system does not prevent the engine from starting, rather it shuts down the fuel in a couple of seconds AFTER the engine is started. But in any case, the standard way to disarm the alarm is to lock and unlock either front foor using the door key. Other than that, you have to get into the door lock switch wiring to see if it is connected to the anti-theft module or not by removing the door panels or by testing the wires at the module which is above the glove box to determine if the lock switches are being sensed. My inclination when problems with this system begin is to just not use or disconnect it, but you can only pull the plug on the module with the engine already running or you set up a "hard" shut down that is only remedied with a diagnostic readout box at a dealership.
But I wonder if the engine won't start at all whether the anti-theft system is involved? It could just be a starting problem instead. Try getting the fault codes out of the engine controller memory: "on-off-on-off-on and leave on" with the ignition swtich in an elapased time of 5 seconds or less. Then watch the check engine light, which remains ON to begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause to get the digits of fault code numbers. Pair together the numbers of flashes to form two digit numbers that are the codes. 55 will always be the last code, because it means end of readout. Then either write back or go to www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html for a code translation. Then I can tell you about what to do to correct any faults. But tell me what engine you have.
