Chrysler Repair: 1996 Sebring Alarm System, door latch, false alarms

Question
My wife and I have a 96 Sebring v6, It's in good condition and we
have done some work to it lately. However, the alarm will randomly
go off. Not just once or twice, but on a regualar basis. We have
tried a number of things to fix it as our neighbors in the
apartments aren't very fond of it going off at 3:00 Am. It does seem
to happen more in the evenning than it does in the day. A about
five months ago we had a number of problems with the idle not
keeping set on it, the auto place said they replaced acouple of
different sensors and I thought that may have also started causing
these p[roblems.

Answer
Hi Jeff,
I doubt that the engine problems and their repair has anything to do with the false alarms. If your Sebring is a convertible (rather than a sedan) I would first consider the possibility that one of the door ajar (or maybe the hood or trunk ajar) switches is not firmly pushed in by its respective sheet metal striking surface because the door latch is too loose. You could check this by setting the alarm and then try pulling on each of those 4 body opening panels to see if one of them is fairly easy to cause the alarm to go off. If so, then I would examine the latch for that door opening and adjust it so that the door is more firmly closed (e.g. move the striker plate inboard in the case of the driver/passenger door being the sensitive one). There is a lot of flexing with the convertible body so the fit of the door openings to the frame is such as to lead to a more likely amount of free play. Other than that, I don't have a simple solution. But assuming everything else works on the alarm and door locking system it seems to me a false activation is the sort of cause to focus upon.
