Chrysler Repair: 89 Lebaron Dash Wiring, digital dash, electronic voice

Question
Roland,

Thanks for taking the time in answering a question!  I have an 89 Lebaron with a 2.5 Turbo and non-digital dash.  The fuse on the dash will repeatedly blow and I can not find a short in the harness.  Any ideas on how to get to the progblem easily!

Thanks

Answer
Hi Dale,
I assume that you are describing fues #13 (5 amp). Unfortunately that one drives a number of systems:
speed control (should only draw when activated)
message center (center console)
dash cluster
concealed headlamp control (under the dash top pad)
chime (over the glove box)
illuminated entry relay with time delay(over the glove box)
air bag diagnostic module (center console, on the bottom)
electronic voice alert (if you have, above the glove box)
I guess that I would be inclined to try and figure out which one of these systems is blowing the fuse by activating them one at a time to the extent that you can control them while looking at the resistance to ground from the downstream side of fuse 13. I think if you get in the car, close the doors, put on the seat belt, and wait for 30 seconds, then see what the resistance reads. Then if the resistance is still a few ohms to ground start try the different switchable items and see if one of them shorts to ground. Otherwise you will need to unplug each of them to find the one that when unplugged removes the short to ground from the fuse socket. I doubt it is a harness short, but more likely one of the components is shorted.
Please let me know what you determine to be the cause. I have the coupe version of the same car as you.
