Chrysler Repair: 95 DODGE AVENGER ENGINE MISSFIRE, dodge avenger, coolant temp

Question
MY DAUGHTERS 1995 DODGE AVENGER ES 2.5L HAS A PROBLEM WITH ROUGH IDLE AND INTERMITENT POWER LOSS AND STALL.THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS OFF BUT FUNCTIONS.THE PLUGS WIRES AND DISTRIBUTER HAVE BEEN REPLACED AS WELL AS THE EGR VALVE.THE ENGINE RUNS FINE FOR THE FIRST TWO MINUTES BUT STARTS TO MISSFIRE WHEN THE PCM TAKES CONTROL AFTER WARMUP.WHERE DO I LOOK NEXT?IS THERE A WAY TO BYPAS THE PCM TO SEE IF IT IS DEFECTIVE ?

Answer
Hi David,
It may well be that a fault in the engine control equipment has been detected by the PCM and stored as a coded number in the memory. So take your ignition key: "on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing this within less that 5 seconds. The check engine light will remain 'on' because you haven't starter the engine but then it will begine to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashed before each pause, then pair those numbers up to form two digit numbers in the order that they appeared. The last pair of numbers will be 55, the code for end of readout. You can get a code translation at: www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html
But how to respond specfically depends upon the engine so let me know the results and I'll give you some specific suggestions from the powertrain troubleshooting manual for the 2.5 V-6. The PCM is needed both in the cold and the warm up state, so you can't by-pass it. But there is even a code for PCM failure so we should know the answer to that question by getting the codes. I wonder if it might be the coolant temp sensor, and there is a code for that fault.
So let me know.
