Chrysler Repair: transmission codes, internal shift, speed error

Question
My 95 cirrus 2.5 v6 auto A604 is going into limp mode after restart it shifts 1-2 not 3 then the prnd stops reading the gear trans. goes out of gear and into limp mode, my friend scanned the codes then cleared and reread the codes with a snapon scanner, said transmission codes 28,36,53. something about check prnd and something about 3rd gear shift. what are the codes and what do you suggest to fix it. I had a output sensor from an old problem I put in to check and then tried the input speed sensor. still no change

Answer
Hi Robert,
The 28 code says there is something wrong with the shifter position signal which is related to a switch on the valve body area of the trans, or the back up lamp relay. It could also be due to a wiring problem between those items and the transaxle controller and even the controller itself could be faulty. But it probably is not related to the 36,53 codes and it doesn't cause limp in mode.
The 36 and 53 mean that there is a fault in the output speed of 3rd gear compared to the torque converter input speed (e.g. slippage). It could mean an internal mechanical problem in the trans (i.e. expensive rebuild necessary) or if your are lucky a hydraulic control problem that can be repaired without removing the trans. The items to consider with the hydraulics are: low trans fluid level, worn fluid pump (do pressure check), sticky or stuck fluid valve (check pressures), faulty regulator valve, valve body leakage, internal shift solenoid leak, or faulty cooling system of the trans fluid. So my recommendation would be to identify the most honest and knowledgeable trans shop that has lots of experience with Chrysler electronic trans (which may or may not be the dealer) and discuss with their trans mechanic whether it would be worth pursing an evaluation of the hyudraulic system first before buying into a removal and rebuild of the trans ($1500-2000). The 36(meaning speed error detected at time of shift) in combo with any speed error means this is not a simple issue, but if you found it was an issue with the valve body or pump then you would avoid spending a great deal more money unnecessarily. Those items are repairable via removing the pans on the underside of the trans.
Good luck on this repair, and please let me know how it works out. It is good that your friend's snap on scanner could read the trans codes; thank him for that.
