Chrysler Repair: rear drive, drive shaft, dodge intrepid

Question
Can the 1998 Dodge Intrepid be fitted with a rear end drive possibly the newer rear drives? I looked at the undercarriage and it seems to have similar bolt patterns minus the rear chuck but everything else seems to allow it to be done. floyd

Answer
Hi Floyd,
I am totally ignorant about a modification of that magnitude. If you had machine shop and the experience nothing is impossible, at least as shown on the TV shows.
But I would think it a major job: change transmission so as to drive a single drive shaft instead of two half shafts, fabiricate a drive shaft, figure out which differential will work with swinging half shafts, change the rear wheel housing to accept the half shafts, etc., etc. Also the engine and trans need to have communication if the drive train is going to work together as a unit, etc. etc.
If someone else has already done it, and written it up completely, then it might be feasible. But I wouldn't want to be the first person to try it.
