Chrysler Repair: 95 dg caravan gear shift lever, chrysler dodge, dodge dealer

Question
Hi , Roland ,
I have 95 dg Caravan 3.3 . When the van cold , its easy to put gear shift lever in PRND3L..After riding , when engine and autotransaxle hot it is more difficult to put gear shift lever in PRND3L.. Van rides ant gear shift normally..

Answer
Hi Viadas,
I haven't experienced a change like that so I can only suggest how I would approach it. There is a mechanical connection between the gear shift cable and the lever on the transmission that actually is moved by cable. I would experiment by disconnecting the cable from the trans and trying to turn the lever manually (maybe using a tool) to get the feel of it when it is cold. Then do the same thing after it is hot and difficult to shift. That way you could tell if it problem is in the cable connection or internal to the transmission.
Also, I would begin by checking the level of the trans fluid, and also shine a light from the rear side of the radiator/trans cooler and observe whether there might not be a build up of leaves or mud so that the trans cooler is not working efficiently which will cause the trans to overheat and thus be causing the shift lever to bind. If you need trans fluid be sure to get it from a Chrysler/Dodge dealer as the trans likes to stay with one brand of fluid.
