Chrysler Repair: 98 town and country, variable resistor, fuse panel

Question
Well where to begin my fuel gage is going haywire. I have replaced everything in the tank and have tested the wires from the cluster back to the tank any idea's were to go from here

Answer
Hi Nicole,
I think you may have been misled about testing the wires from the "cluster to the tank" unless you have a digital readout device to do so. The way it works is that the fuel gauge is a variable resistor depending upon the fuel level. The body control module measures the resistance and creates a digital signal that is sent with other data on what is called the data bus line (2) to the instrument cluster which takes all the data coming in on the line and separates it and sends to the individual displays. I would check, if you haven't already, that the fuel gauge to body computer wire is patent. It is a dark blue wire that goes from the tank to the blue plug of the body controller which is located under the dash on the driver side behind the fuse panel. It could be that there is some dirt or water on the plug's pin for that wire where it enters the body controller. I believe you will find the dark blue wire about at the middle of the blue plug's array of wires.
or the wire could be loose at either end or shorting to ground due to insulation lesion. There is also a green 16-pin interconnector at the left end of the instrument panel where the wire could be loose or corrosion around its pin or socket there. Once it is digitized and goes from the controller to the cluster I don't think there is any way to repair a malfunction short of replacing either the module or the cluster. So focus on the wire from the level sender at the tank to the body computer and hope that you find the issue to be with it.
